Our co-CEO and co-Founder, Joey, was honored to write a letter to other business leaders for B Corp’s Board Playbook, a practical guide for companies looking to adopt the highest form of stakeholder governance: DE Public Benefit Corporation. The Playbook is available for any Executives, Investors, and Directors who are starting to explore the idea of pursuing Public Benefit Corporation status as a requirement of B Corp Certification.

Fifty years ago, Milton Friedman published his famous essay in the New York Times stating that the role of the company is to ‘make as much profit as possible within the rules…

Glass Fire in Napa, CA

Like in many other areas of the world, climate change is increasing the frequency of hot, dry days here in California. Not only that, but our warming planet is leading to record high winds and earlier springtime snowmelt. The combined effect of increased development near wooded, sub-optimal forest management, and these impacts of climate change is longer, more destructive fire seasons. This is the new normal. And, unless we take drastic action, it’s only going to get worse from here.

Our “house” is on fire and climate change is the spark.

In my lifetime, California’s burned area has increased by 5x. Six of the 20 largest wildfires recorded in California’s history…

Fifty years ago, the economist Milton Friedman warned in his seminal essay, “The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits,” that corporate executives would undermine the “basis of a free society” if they acted as if “business has a ‘social conscience’ and takes seriously its responsibilities for providing employment, eliminating discrimination, avoiding pollution and whatever else may be the watchwords of the contemporary crop of reformers.”

Instead of operating in a manner that treated all stakeholders fairly, Mr. Friedman argued, every corporation should seek solely to “increase its profits within…

Three weeks into the US lockdown, Allbirds applied for and received a loan from the SBA under its Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). We have since returned the loan, and wanted to share our reasoning.

When we initially applied on behalf of our 339 US-based employees, we, like many, faced unparalleled uncertainty–for the first time since we launched in March of 2016, we were losing money — lots of it — with nearly all of our US and International stores shuttered, and key markets in Australia and New Zealand shut down (including e-commerce). …

Last weekend, after a full month at home, I took a bike ride with my three young kids to the local beach. When we got there, it was surreal. The weather was perfect, and there was almost nobody else in sight.

And as we played on the beach, we saw a strange grey mass on the sand. My three year old was the first to realize it wasn’t a rock — it was a massive seal! Thinking it was injured, we called the Marine Mammal Center to alert the staff. …

At Allbirds, we’re on a mission to make better things in a better way. Better for you, and better for the planet, too. And while we’re hard at work, there are a few truths we hold onto that help guide our day-to-day.

First and foremost, climate change is an apocalyptic problem. It’s the number one issue facing our generation. This problem belongs to all of us, not just a select few.

Second, and almost equally important, we admit we don’t have all the answers. That’s why we ask lots of questions. We think everyone should ask lots of questions. …

We recently saw a product Amazon makes and sells that is strikingly similar to our Wool Runner. Last week, we were asked by Christiane Amanpour about this, and whether we’d been in touch to make sure that you are aware of our open-sourced, sustainable technologies and their applicability to your product. The prompt felt fair, and we hope this reaches you.

We are flattered at the similarities that your private label shoe shares with ours, but hoped the commonalities would include these environmentally-friendly materials as well. Alas, we’re here to help. As we’ve done with over 100 other brands who…
